"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Matthew 6:33 |
“The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.” Psalms 34:18-19 KJV We are all so broken. The evidence is on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat. We share our contrite hearts with friends that have no healing balm. We give our broken fragments to men and women to hold and parse, though they have no solution for our issues. Memes scream I have been torn apart. Half naked selfies scream I'm insecure. Our bodies reveal the condition of our hearts. We sell our brokenness as if it is valuable to man, when the only one who can truly value our vulnerability is God. God loves our brokenness. Psalms 34:18 tells us so. I believe his affection for contrite hearts is because that is often the only place we surrender to him. We walk around stubbornly holding our pieces until they become so tiny we can't hold on to them. Then, we finally choose to give them to God. I know. I spent three years grappling with broken pieces until my sin overwhelmed me. This process of brokenness and mending isn't new. Look at the people of God. They were broken over and over again. Each time they learned a new way that the master could renew them. David is another example in the Bible of God's breaking a restoring power. When we look at the testimony in the Psalms we see that David's brokenness was paramount to his purpose. So what about you? Have you hoarded your broken things? Are they stored where you think they are safe? Like me have you taken your broken things to a counselor without taking them to God? Your broken things have a place. They belong in the hands of God. Jesus endured the breaking of his flesh so that your heart could be mended. And at the feet of our savior, your heavy burdens will find a home. Your cares, concerns, worries and baggage aren't wanted anywhere else. Don't be fooled into thinking that anyone but God will tenderly care for your brokenness. Your brokenness is for Christ Alone. I encourage you to read all of Psalms 34. See how David rejoices in his broken posture before God and ask God to help you find security in being vulnerable to his will. Prayer: Father God on today I relinquish every part of me to you. I surrender to you with a heart that is willing to break my routine to accept yours. I ask dear Lord for forgiveness for holding on to my brokenness and giving it to others. And on today, I commit to bringing you my broken heart, finances, dreams, plans and will. Your way is sovereign. Your will is best. I receive everything you have for me. I cast down every imagination that sets itself against you. I call you Father today. I call you Master today. Have your God like way in my life. Have another moment in prayer!
